Translations to be moved

[edit]

User:Umarxon III has translated a lot to Uzbek language. That's really fine, but they got the wrong variant. Instead of "uz" (or even "uz-latn") they took "uz-cyrl". I don't know how to fix that correctly. Can anyone help? Affected are Commons:User access levels/uz-cyrl and Commons:Upload Wizard/uz-cyrl. Thanks! --Achim55 (talk) 20:48, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Achim55 The individual Translations: namespace pages have to be moved. I'll take care of it, once they stop adding new ones. Just left them a talk page message. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 21:26, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved the translations from uz-latn to uz-cyrl. A few notes:
  • Moving translation units doesn't create the relevant translation page, you'll have to edit a translation unit in Special:Translate for that to happen
  • Even if the translation page is already created, moving units to it won't affect the edit history of the translation page. While the units maintain their history, there is no obvious link from the translation page to the translation units so attribution may need to be added in an edit summary.
  • The Translate extension prevents most methods of dummy edits. You could add a comment somewhere or add an extra space between sentences, but I just decided to add !!FUZZY!! and then remove it.
  • The interaction between translatable pages and LanguageConverter is still messy. It looks like some languages have translation into LanguageConverter-supported variants disabled, but Uzbek doesn't. That probably means I should have moved these to uz, and we should get uz-* disabled. I can work on that unless there are objections for some reason I'm overlooking.

The nonexistance of a <notranslate> tag

[edit]

I apologize if this is the wrong place but I was recently working on Template:Move/i18n and put |user = {{subst:REVISIONUSER}} but due to the translation restrictions it wouldn’t append I think a no translate tag would work for this as this is a code bit and could be marked as a minor like not done tag for articles so users can easily apend text to different languages Cyberwolf (talk) 19:23, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cyberwolf: Could you produce your case for me in a sandbox? We don't have any notranslate tag but I'd be glad to help. Regards, Aafi (talk) 17:16, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I produced it on that template
I18n is the base and the edit doesn’t work cause it needs translated (not really) and that’s locked to admin cause it was deemed complete + I don’t know how to replicate that scenario Cyberwolf (talk) 17:41, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Translate-tagger

[edit]

Hello dear fellow TA's, Together with my friend @Gopavasanth, I am co-mentoring development of a tool that we currently call "Translate-Tagger", to support translation markup. I am personally hoping the tool to provide automated <translate> markup, including tvar support and alongside issuing markup for categories used within a page. We have a dedicated Phabricator ticket for this, and I welcome your input. Regards, Aafi (talk) 15:40, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am looking at the Threshold of originality of the UK, but I found that the original article of Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United Kingdom#Threshold of originality ( OK for some simple logos...) and its English "translation" ( Not OK for most logos...) are apparently different, causing confusion during translating. Any ideas why bots doesn't reflect the change? Saimmx (talk) 03:07, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Both links are exactly the same. Yann (talk) 09:21, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah sorry, English "translation" is provided. --Saimmx (talk) 15:46, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question about an inscription

[edit]

i've photographed a groundplate in a belgium church, which inscription i truly can't decipher - File:BE DOL BD Église Saint-Georges Siegel und Inschrift Boden.jpg

The language could be (old) french or latin, the letters seems to be artistic with a runic character.

Can anybody help? Grunpfnul (talk) 09:16, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Help with preparing a page for translation

[edit]

Hi all; Raymond suggested I ask my question here, so copying from COM:VP:

I would like to translate the documentation page Template:Information/doc into German but I'm not sure how to prepare that page for translation. It seems it's not available in any other language than English as yet? The "language select" at the top of the page has only translated one sentence into Japanese and seems to be the wrong method for this page anyway ("should be used only when there are very few translations, and for translating a few sentences.[...] only intended for pages (like generated activity reports, or user pages) that will be rarely translated"). The only part that is translated into German and other languages is the box {{Documentation subpage}} at the top. I'd like to translate the full documentation into German (note, not {{Information}} itself which is translated at Translatewiki, I gather - where I don't have an account; apparently it's not part of Wikimedia's global account system). Gestumblindi (talk) 08:51, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Any help? ;-) Maybe {{Autotranslate}} should be used? But how, exactly? I'm not quite sure how this would be connected to the template itself which is translated at Translatewiki (apparently, I have a hard time even finding the template there)... Gestumblindi (talk) 08:19, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks in advance for your help! Gestumblindi (talk) 18:39, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Matrix should be able to help :) signed, Aafi (talk) 06:59, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Gestumblindi: sorry for the wait, I've not been online for a while. Every parameter in the documentation page's source code that ends in -en, just copy and paste it below and replace it with -de and translate the text. I made a small example at User:Matrix/sandbox4/doc which you can check the source code of. IMO this information should probably be a bit more obvious and there should probably be a "translate" button with instructions on the template, I might code that later. —Matrix(!) ping onewhen replying {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 14:24, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Matrix: Thank you! I intend to look at this soon. Gestumblindi (talk) 20:43, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Matrix: I'm still a bit confused looking at the source code of Template:Information/doc. In addition to the parameters ending in -en you mention, there is also English text outside these parameters, for example in the introduction The date of a photograph must be when the original photograph was created ..., or the section Microformat. How to translate these; that is, how to translate the whole page? Gestumblindi (talk) 20:38, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Gestumblindi: You can use {{LangSwitch}} for anything outside Template:TemplateBox. Sorry everything is so complicated... —Matrix(!) ping onewhen replying {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 11:29, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Can't all articles with pending changes be marked for translation at once?

[edit]

Here Aafi wrote Special:PageTranslation, where you can see a list of […] and also there where some pending changes are yet to be marked for translation. but there's 358 of such Pages with pending changes not yet marked for translation there (plus I don't see many users marking pages for translation and many of these pages have last been edited long ago). Can't they all be automatically be marked for translation or many at once or all that match some criteria like not being edited the last x days so as to exclude pages that have recently been vandalized or where content changed/added may be controversial? Prototyperspective (talk) 17:31, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There's no way that this can be automated given the delicacies associated with the markup. We have very fewer translation admins, and well equipped, even lesser. signed, Aafi (talk) 02:57, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying. Maybe it would be possible to sort a list of pages with pending changes not yet marked for translation by time of since when changes are pending so that pages with changes pending for a long time get addressed first so e.g. edits made a year ago or so or older are always synced / displaying (marked for translation). Prototyperspective (talk) 09:05, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Kind Pppery once used to follow a practice on m:Meta talk:Babylon (example: this) which allowed to keep an easy track, but that's not a requirement nor an expectation from any TA, nor does it guarantee that the listed pages would catch immediate attention. Imagine the number of active TA's here, and then how many watch this page regularly. I wonder if someone volunteers to make a list of old pages with pending changes that need to be marked for translation, I'd be happy to help with marking. signed, Aafi (talk) 09:36, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to edit the comment to cross out any pages after they have been marked. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 00:00, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Do you really think working with such a list is needed? Most cases only require one click as there are only minor changes often even outside of the translatable part. I would suggest to make a list only for cases where corrections in the translate syntax are needed. GPSLeo (talk) 05:32, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
+1. Pages with minor changes get marked nonetheless. I find it personally tedious to each time visit Special:PageTranslation particularly to check pages with pending changes: so a list like this seems helpful, but those with minor changes shouldn't usually be listed. signed, Aafi (talk) 08:45, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It would make the long list of pages on Special:PageTranslation smaller. Also, I don't see any downsides of marking a page for translation. Thanks for compiling this list! Prototyperspective (talk) 16:12, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
